Janmashtami celebration happens on astami tithi on the month of Bhadra Krishna Paksha as per Hindu Calender. Janmashtami in 2012 will be celebrated on 10th August 2012( Thursday). Janmashtami been celebrated across India with a high spirit. It is believed that between 3200 and 3100 BC Krishna was living on earth.
How is Janmashtami Celebrated?
On the eve of Janmashtami devotees from different parts of country celebrate janmashtami festival in different way. Rasa Lila a special dramatic enactment of Krishna life featured in Mathura and Vrindavan. Rasa lila re-creates the flirtatious aspects of Krishna’s youthful days People chant Hare Krishna Hare Rama throughout the day.

If it is Janamashtmi in North India, it is raas lila in Mathura / Vrindavan, better known as dahi handi across the Maharashtrian belt, in Odisha it becomes Nandotava or Nand Utsav. The North East celebrates it as Krishnajanma while the South goes all out to celebrate Krishna Jayanti, uriadi or Gokulashtami. The point is, Krishna’s birthday is celebrated with great fervor and frolic across the entire country!
